The work on 18th hole is nearing completion.  The fairway has been repositioned and new bunkers have been placed along the left side and middle of the fairway.  The hole is due to be open 8/22/10 for play.  This now plays as a 475 yard par 4, making it to a fantastic ending to 18 holes of golf in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Camp Groundhog Fun,

      We had a wonderful time with all the little ones at Camp Groundhog this year.  The children had so much to do.  George, our Tennis Pro, had them breaking a sweat on the courts.  Bo, our Golf Pro, had the kids on the driving range and the golf course hitting balls.  Mechelle and Sherry were into all kinds of fun stuff with the kids.  Volleyball, crafts, hay rides and swimming were just a few of the fun things that were available to the kids.  As you can see by the pictures, I too had a great time teaching them to make pasta dough from scratch.  They all looked so cute in their chef hats.  These kids were really into the cooking class.  They really wanted to learn and did a great job making pasta.  We may have a few future chefs in our group!

     If your child was not part of this first Camp Groundhog, I highly recommend you sign them up for our next session.  They will enjoy memories that last a life time.

     Living in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains is a true blessing.  I enjoy going four wheeling and taking a hike through rhododendron and mountain laurels these are just some of the activities here at Olde Mill.  Chef Ed’s pups, Mocha and Abagail, keep us company during the day riding around with myself and Bradley our Head Course Superintendent.  Life here is simple no traffic lights, horns or sirens or hour long commutes to dinner and a movie, you simply go about your life one day at a time.  This truly is Blue Ridge Mountain Living as it should be.

Trail work continues along Little Reed Creek. The trail works it’s way through the course, along the creek, through fields, and forest. Which allows a multitude of views available for the people that just want to get away from it all. Making Olde Mill a great destination for Blue Ridge Mountain Living at it’s finest.

 

 

 

 

 

     Currently the 18th hole is nearing completion.  The Maples

     crew is shaping the fairway bunkers and leveling the right

     side of the fairway.  There are new sets of tee’s being added

     as well.  Making this hole a great finish to a round of golf

     in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

    One of the best parts of the mountain lifestyle at Olde Mill is the endless miles of winding country roads.  When I am not in the kitchen preparing for your next meal, I love to spend time out in the fresh air running up and down those country roads.  There is such a calming effect that comes over me when I get out there to begin a new journey through the roads that twist through farmland, horse pastures, and of course the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The fresh air is what fuels my runs and has a cleansing effect on my soul.  All the stress and worries of daily life seem to melt away with every deep breath of that unspoiled stuff.  It carries all the scents of the local blooms, which are ever changing.  I have discovered many wildflowers and blooming trees along these barely traveled roads while happily trotting along.  It is also a great treat for me when I come up to the crest of a rolling hill and find that cool breeze waiting for me at the top. It rewards and encourages me to continue on for another mile.  Here in Southwest Virginia I have found myself running further and faster than at anytime in my life.  The terrain and altitude have strengthened my lungs and increased my endurance to allow me to excel at new personal bests when I venture down the mountain to other towns for organized races.  I posted the best time of my life for a 5k in Galax this past fall and I attribute that to the training I do here around Olde Mill. 

      I am very excited about our nature trails being cleared now alongside the Little Reed Island River which winds through our resort property.  It has a layer of mulch that softens the shock on your knees and ankles for those who may be less likely to run on pavement or asphalt.  The trails will be growing to several miles in length.  They will also provide our guests and homeowners with a refuge like no other in our area.  There will be plenty of places to stop, rest, and enjoy the sounds of the trickling water. 

      For those runners who are competitive or just casual that want to help with a fundraising event, we will be organizing a race here at Olde Mill over the next few months.  It will be an opportunity to help raise money for worthy causes while we take an afternoon to enjoy some of this fresh mountain air and gather for some food and music after the race is complete.  Our hopes are to make this an annual event.  Details will be forthcoming!  Meanwhile, I have listed a few of the local races going on in the next few months.  Come stay with us to run a local race, and enjoy the relaxing calm that you can only get from mountain living at Olde Mill!

     With renovations nearing completion here.  Our new superintendent Bradley Boyd has started work on some smaller projection that include sodding of some new areas around the course.  The 5th hole has a new rock wall around the green as well as a huge rock wall next to the green.  Bradley and the crew cleaned this area and put sod down as well to enhance the rock.  I think they did a tremendous job making the 5th hole even more appealing! You can also see the sod has grown in nicely around the rock wall surrounding the green!  This fall Olde Mill will be Blue Ridge Mountain Golf at its finest.
