Chef Ed in Toronto
What a great day at the Toronto Golf show!  We met so many people the first day it hard to even give it a headcount.  Many of the golfers we met had been to Olde Mill in the past and were already planning to visit us this April or May.  We also were able to inform many Canadians of our world class golf resort on the Blue Ridge who had never had the pleasure of playing it.  We found others yet who were just interested in staying a few nights with us and taking in the swimming, hiking and site seeing that we have to offer.  It is a great indicator that 2010 is going to be a great year at Olde Mill and another chance to make new relationships that will last a lifetime.  If you are in the Toronto area, you still have Saturday and Sunday to meet us in person and get the best tee times locked in for this spring and summer.  Its first come, first serve so don’t get left out.  See you at the show!

On the way to Canada!

Chef Ed with Vines

As we journey to the our north for the Toronto Golf and Travel Show, we set aside some time to visit the heart of Canada’s wine country. Over 500 wineries are located in Canada and 98% of those are located in Ontario and B.C. That is a pretty intense concentration of vines! It also makes it possible for quite a few tastings this week. Canada is famous for its ice wines and rieslings. However, I am quickly finding out that there is so much more here to offer the discerning wine connoisseurs. I have been routinely surprised by the variety of grapes grown here and the quality of the reds here. I will fill you in on all the juicy details as we tackle these delicious creations this weekend. It is a tough job but someone has to do it!

Chef Ed’s Winter Pick’s

Chef Ed's Picks

Hello again everyone from the snow covered Blueridge Mountains in God’s country.  I have been taking some time to seek out some delicious winter juice for you to enjoy these last few months of winter.  I have had a pretty wide sampling of reds but there were two that really stood out to me and I would like to share my impressions with you here today.

Davis Family 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
A big juicy elegant wine with great weight.  you will pick up lots of dried fruit flavors like currant and cherry.  There is also an underlying cafe mocha spice going on that really makes this a complex delicious treat.  You can find this on wine lists at 90 to 100 dollars and in wine shops from 50 to 65 dollars.  Well worth the asking price.  Share it with some friends or loved ones whenever you can.

Ramey Claret 2005, Napa Valley
This is a Bordeaux style blend that includes  54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petite Verdot, 1% Malbec, and 7% Syrah.  It is a fresh medium bodied food wine.  You can drink it with most anything in my opinion if you are a red wine junkie like me.  It has some oak and cedar notes with dried pit fruitiness.  A great value at 30 to 40 dollars wholesale and around 65 dollars at your favorite restaurant.  Parker scored it an 88 and I give it a bit more at 90 points.

If you are able to try one or both of these, feel free to let me know what you think of them.  I personally have reordered them this week and look forward to a few more glasses with some friends on my birthday.  Have a great week and remember that life is too short to drink bad wine!

Wine Update #1

January 15th, 2010

Hello again my friends!

Today I wanted to take the time to talk about one of my favorite grape varietals, Zinfandel.  It is a great all around wine that can be paired with anything from roasted chicken to baby back ribs.  It also has a wonderful affinity for chocolate desserts!  Zinfandel’s usually have a rich fruitiness like that of blackberries.  They also have a luscious mouth feel and tend to finish with a spicy or even peppery flavor with some tannins.  Of course each label will have its own style but these characteristics seem to be consistent with this varietal.  California has really dominated this market even though it is a European grape.  And as far as California wines go, it is very affordable.  There are dozens of great wines under 30 bucks that drink like a much more expensive wine.  Here are a few you may want to check out.  Let me know what you think and be sure to try it with different types of food to see where it best suits your palate.

Rosenblum , Appelation Series 2007 , Paso Robles
Four Vines , The Sophisticate 2007 , Paso Robles
Ridge, Dry Creek Valley 2007 , Sonoma
Seghesio, Sonoma County Zinfandel 2004,  Sonoma
Layer Cake, Primitivo 2007 , Barossa Australia
Dashe, Dry Creek 2007 , Sonoma

Remember to celebrate each day because no one is promised tomorrow and what better way to do so than with a great wine, delicious food and great friends!

Hello to all my foodie friends!

This winter I am working on building a series of blogs here at www.oldemill.net to educate and entertain our members and guests from all over the globe.  I will be reviewing the trends in food and dining, new wine releases and what to pair with them, different styles of cheeses, local and international beers, and introducing local farmers and winemakers.   Of course I will also be posting some of my favorite recipes along the way as well.  I am currently in Chicago meeting with different chefs and picking their brains on the trends in the food world today.  As you know, Chicago is home to some of the most famous restaurants and chefs in the world.  Even the fast food is good in Chicago!  I hope to use the cutting edge trends here to better develop delicious offerings for our guests at our beautiful mountain resort.  2010 is going to be an exciting year for us all here at Olde Mill Golf Resort.  I hope that you will come visit us often here at our website and even more at the restaurant!

Happy New Year!

Two new homes “Falls Creek” and the “Woodbridge” at Olde Mill.

Look at whats going on now!

The first homes being constructed in Olde Mill’s newest neighborhood are nearing completion.  Olde Mill’s Laurel Mountain neighborhood is the first mountain attached living homes in Southwestern Virginia’s gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains.  The nearly completed homes were designed by Award Winning Atlanta Home Designer Mike Garrell from Garrell and Associates.  These beautifully designed mountain craftsman homes overlook the first four holes of Olde Mill’s Maples Golf Course as well as boasting an awesome view of the mountain lake at the center of the property…

The “Falls Creek” and the “Woodbridge”, have similar architecture to many homes seen throughout the mountains of North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee although Garrell and Associates have created a unique design for these homes which are only available in Olde Mill’s Laurel Mountain Manors.  The plans are exclusively designed for Olde Mill and will not be available anywhere else. Both homes have two bedrooms and two baths on the main level with the option to finish the terrace level and add two additional bedrooms and two additional baths.  Each of the homes have very unique floor plans while both have the warm mountain feel of stone fireplaces, exposed timbers and hand distressed hickory floors to give owners the true meaning of Blue Ridge Mountain living in Southwestern Virginia.

Tours are available by appointment with Mark Wuerthele, Olde Mill’s Director of Real Estate Sales seven days a week. Please come see the first community of this type in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains along with other homes available at Olde Mill.  They are truly an example of mountain living the way it should be!
